Welsh Shotokan Karate Association
The Welsh Shotokan Karate Association was founded in 1985 by Gabe Operanta under the auspices of the Welsh Karate Federation. The Association expanded through Cardiff and quickly established three successful clubs in the areas of Ely, Splott and Canton. In 1992 The Wrexham Karate Club Joined the WSKA to establish a larger association and provide the Shotokan style to a broader spectrum.
By this time Sensei Operanta was a very established competitor at national and international level allowing him to gain vital knowledge of the highest level. Sensei Operanta moved to Wrexham to open a karate club which soon became a full time occupation, this enabled his students to have high levels of tuition which led to the club and it's members wining medals at national and international competition on a regular basis. Now back in Cardiff since 1999, Sensei Operanta is currently teaching at the WSKA main dojo in Grangetown, Cardiff.
All instructors and their assistant coaches are Welsh Karate Governing Body (WKGB) registered, holding the appropriate coaching award (Level one or two WKGB), as well as being first aid trained. Sensei Operanta also holds the WKGB coaching assessor award.
As part of the WSKA constitution all instructors have been CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) checked and have undergone child awareness and protection training recognised by the WKGB.
The WSKA follows a traditional style of Shotokan karate with Sensei Operanta being awarded his 7th dan by the WKGB in July 2006.
